FAMILIAR THREAT

It was night, and their camp was set inside an old church-like building. Thormon decided to explore the old building. He walked around and saw many rooms. He tried to see if could find anything interesting inside this place.

There could be hidden treasures inside this place, he thought. He continued to search until coming across a strange wall. “This is an awfully thick wall between these two rooms,” he said, while knocking on the wall.

He noticed that the sound accused a hollow compartment. The kid called the others and told them about his findings, and they started to take notice of it.

Bernard looked at the wall and said, “It looks like this section was built later.”

“Indeed, it does!” said Julio.

“Do you still have your hammer?” Fabio asked Bernard.

“Yes,” he said.

“Then take down the wall!”

The noise of breaking stones was the only sound.

“Hush! Remember the four-armed hairy beast that was following us? It can hear us and track us!” Robert said, worried.

“Don’t worry, Robert. There is not and never was anything following us. It was just your mind playing tricks on you,” Miguel replied as they continued to break the wall.

Robert, still worried, asked, “Why did your dog start barking like crazy?”

“I don’t know. The noise probably is disturbing him,” answered Miguel.

“Well, do something about it!” said Robert angrily.

“You do it!” said Miguel, while hitting the wall with the hammer.

“All right! I’ll quiet down that stupid mutt!” Robert got up and went outside the church. When Robert got close to the dog, it cried and ran away. “You stupid mutt! It’s me! Come back here!” he shouted.

Little did he realize that a big shadow was upon him. He felt something strange and evil in the air. He turned around and a towering, ten-heads-tall monster with four arms and a foul breath opened its big mouth to full length. Robert stared at it, speechless, and then fainted without making a sound.

Inside the church, Bernard was able to take down the wall and decided to look inside. He found a dusty wooden bookshelf with three tomes and four wine bottles in good condition. This place seemed to be a small storage room, long abandoned. Looking closer, they could see that all the books had the same subject but in different languages.

“Asylum Untainted by Imaculus. Isn’t Imaculus that dark lord Lela talked about?” asked Thormon.

“Wow, this must be at least a thousand years old,” Fabio mused.

Bernard decided to look at the fireplace and couldn’t see Robert. “Where in the world did Robert go? It’s awfully quiet now. I’d better see if that bum didn’t kill the dog or isn’t drugging himself.”

Meanwhile, at the front hall, the beast was tired of waiting and entered the church, one step at time. Unaware, Bernard was searching for Robert and the dog when he noticed a growing shadow.

“Is it you, Robert?” asked Bernard, noticing the shadow growing closer. But an awful stench alarmed the bard, who stood up to face the monster—but the monster was swift and hit Bernard’s nape, putting the man unconscious.
